FAQs

  • I have never done yoga. What class is for me?

Yogacalm classes are small enough for individual attention. However, sometimes people like to do individual classes before they join a group class. Contact me and have a chat about what your needs are and what you’re looking for.

  • “Yoga is not for me. I am not flexible.”

Most people in my classes (including me) are not naturally flexible. Great benefits are gained by very gradually developing your range of movement and strength. This gentle and supported yoga meets your body exactly where you are.

  • "I can’t turn my mind off, I can’t stop my thoughts."

Yogacalm uses restorative yoga practices to rest your body in supported positions. With simple breathing practices the mind follows that restful direction – effortlessly.

Yogacalm also teaches simple meditation practices are just that – practice. Breathing and mindfulness meditation practices teach us to access stillness and inhabit stillness. Even when the mind is busy. A lovely paradox.

  • “I can’t meditate, my mind is too active.”

Yogacalm teaches simple meditation practices are just that – practice. Breath work and meditation teach us to focus into stillness, even when the mind is busy. A lovely paradox. My experience is that yoga movements and breathing settle the mind, preparing the way for peaceful meditation, even though that is not the goal.

I would say that the goal is more about accepting what happens and trusting that the meditation practices are beneficial, whether or not we have a particular experience.

  • “I have had breast cancer and my body is extremely sensitive. I don’t think I can do most of the yoga poses. Why would I go to a yoga class?”

Breast cancer can be accompanied by stress, fear, pain and procedures. Yoga classes for women with breast cancer create an affirming, safe space to come and be as you are. Having studied yoga therapy for women with breast cancer and in breast cancer recovery I can offer yoga practices specific to various stages, treatments and recovery.

  • “I am too old for yoga. I am too stiff and sore or I am out of breath. What if can’t get on the floor?”

The benefits of gently mobilizing our joints, stretching and strengthening as we age are well documented. Yogacalm provides support (including chairs) and builds yoga with simple, accessible moves. I am over 60 and have been modifying my yoga practice for a few years now, due to knee surgery and arthritis in some joints. Yogacalm specialises in ‘yoga for seniors’ to understand how to make yoga accessible for people with all kinds of aches, pains and chronic ailments.
